Introduction to Quartz Heaters
  1. Quartz Sheath
Shields radiating coil from ambient loss due to external drafts. Quartz tube provides the highest infrared transmission capability of any material available. Quartz tubes are more durable than tungsten filament lamps or sealed quartz tubes and has a life expectancy up to several years. Quartz heater gives out very low emission in the visible spectrum, hence fewer glares.
  2. Terminals
Most standard is the 10-32 stainless steel screw terminal. Also available with various other terminations like lead wire, quick disconnects type etc. (Refer to Terminations and Style).
  3. Ceramic Caps
Specially designed insulating ventilated caps facilitate breathing of the heater during heating and cooling. Ceramic caps also act like a support for the heater. Varieties of caps are available for different terminations.
  4. Cement
A high temperature, low expansion cement is used for bonding the quartz and the ceramic caps. Quartz heaters are also manufactured without cement where alternate method of supporting is used.
  5. Coil
Optimum design of the coil provides uniform heat, a clear red color at full design voltage and a infrared medium wave length at energy peak of 2.30 to 3.00 microns. Fast acting design is also available when needed. Coil is designed to be used in horizontal position only.

Technical Information about Quartz Heaters
  • Efficient and Instantaneous Heat
  • Fast Heat Response and Cooling
  • Conservation of Energy
  • Functional Design
  • High Operating Temperatures
Features

All hot materials radiate energy. Energy is transferred in line of sight by electromagnetic waves, emitted by the source (hot surface) and absorbed by the sink, i.e. the cooler surface. The amount of radiant energy transferred depends on temperature, emissivity and the effective surface area of the source and sink.

Heaters, which utilize radiant energy to transfer heat, are commonly known as infrared radiant heaters. Radiant energy is absorbed into the surface layer of material being heated and then dispersed through the material by conduction. Before you dry, heat, bake or cure any product with any heat source check Akinsun quartz heater features.

Fast Response and Efficient Heat

Standard quartz heaters have a response time of 80% within 15 seconds and 100% within 30 seconds with almost the same cooling time. These heaters are quiet, cool and emit no significant glare. Infrared heat waves are absorbed by both light and dark color surfaces at the same speed. Special heaters can be designed for response times quicker than 15 seconds.

Ceramic Infrared Emitter Heaters

Ceramic infrared heaters are capable of almost endless variety of combinations to produce heater patterns specifically suited to customer specifications.

When infrared energy strikes an object, it is absorbed, transmitted, or reflected from the surface. An object that absorbs 100% of the infrared energy produced is known as a blackbody. A blackbody has an emissivity of 1.0. An object with an emissivity of 0.0 is a perfect reflector and does not absorb radiant heat. Ceramic heaters have an emissivity of 0.9. The infrared ceramic heating elements is made of a high temperature resistance nickel chrome alloy. This element is fired inside the ceramic material. This process and the glazed surface of the ceramic radiator provide extensive protection for the metallic heating elements, preventing both oxidation and corrosion. By knowing the absorption characteristics of the material being processed and by selecting an infrared emitter with similar characteristics, massive savings on energy can be achieved.

Ceramic Insulated Band Heaters – Redband
INTRODUCTION

AKINSUN ceramic Redbandä heaters, used for industrial processing, have one primary purpose, to heat machinery parts or materials quickly, efficiently and contribute to productivity. These ceramic band heaters are capable of generating higher temperatures essential to process todays high temperature resins. Because of the low thermal conductivity of the ceramic fiber insulation, the external surface temperature of the ceramic band heater is approximately 400F while running the inside surface temperature up to 1200F.

Ceramic band heaters are manufactured in full range of standard construction variation, physical dimensions, electrical ratings and complete arrangement of screw terminals and lead terminations. These heaters are flexible and easy to install. Interconnecting ceramic bodies allow heaters to be easily opened and wrapped around the cylinder. AKINSUN heaters are designed and manufactured with materials to assure long life.

Ceramic band heaters can be custom manufactured to the size and diameter you need with all the necessary variations.

FEATURES
  1. TERMINAL BOX:
  2. A steel terminal box offers excellent protection to exposed terminals. The box has a 5/8" knock-out that will accept standard conduit or flexible armor cable connectors.

  3. SCREW TERMINALS:
  4. Screw terminals are standard on most ceramic insulated heater bands. Stainless steel screw terminals connected to solid nickel pins are designed to provide maximum amperage carrying capacity. Brackets are located 180 from the screw terminals.

  5. STAINLESS STEEL SHEATH:
  6. Stainless steel housing with serrated edges provides maximum flexibility for ease of installation. Wall thickness of the sheath is chosen to provide mechanical strength, and thermal-conductivity. Sheath material will not become brittle when subject to high heat environment.

  7. CERAMIC FIBER INSULATION:
  8. A 1/4" thick ceramic fiber insulation material is chosen for its dielectric and thermo-conducitivity characteristics. This keeps the heat on the cylinder and is not lost to the atmosphere. Specially designed mounting brackets with 1/4"-20 socket cap screws are used to securely draw the heating element assembly against the cylinder evenly and tightly across its entire width.

  9. NICKEL CHROME RESISTANCE WIRE:
  10. Wire is selected from different sizes and resistance then precision wound on machines, allowing to include the maximum amount of wire possible in each heater. This allows heater to remain cool while providing maximum heat.

  11. RADIAL LOCKUP FLANGE:
  12. Heavy-duty stainless steel flange is spot welded to outer sheath. A firm pressure extends over the width of the band to assure good lockup.

Ceramic Insulated Band Heaters

Plastics processing require high operating temperatures and fast production rates. Our ceramic band heaters are designed to meet these demands. These heaters are, in effect, high temperature electric furnaces capable of very efficient heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation. Built in insulation minimizes unwanted temperature changes along the barrel.

Other types of band heaters are primarily conductive, requiring an intimate fit with components being heated. Grooves or other surface irregularities form voids under the bands, resulting in hot spots and pre mature heater failure. Ceramic bands are recommended here, because efficient heat transfer is not affected by irregular surfaces or loose fit. At higher watt densities they can be used in wider increments then other heaters. This means you can reduce the number of bands used and simplify wiring.

Bolt Heaters-Durabolt™
INTRODUCTION

Bolt heaters are used to pre heat large, hollow holding bolts or studs. These heaters are used as an aid to tighten large bolts in heavy machinery, servicing of hydraulic presses, compressors, die blocks, steam or pressure vessels and other equipment. A high concentration of heat is needed to expand both allowing further tightening of the nut. As the bolt cools and contracts it results in the nut being drawn even tighter. Bolt heater is specifically designed to provide with close tolerance fits, watt densities of 100 watts per square inch. Which is almost 65% higher than standard cartridge or tubular heating elements can deliver. Bolt heaters provide quicker heat up time and minimum heat loss to the area surrounding the bolt.

Introduction to Tubular Heaters
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Tubular Heaters
GENERAL INFORMATION

Akinsuns electric line of tubular heaters is the most versatile of all heating elements. They can be used in straight or formatted configurations. Since most tubular are designed for specific applications, this portion of the catalog will serve as a guide for your particular design. Because of their flexibility in design they can be used for heating liquids, gas, radiant heaters, for casing into aluminum, bronze or iron.

CONSTRUCTION

Akinsun tubular heaters are made from the highest quality materials under carefully researched manufacturing methods. The nickel chromium resistances wire coil is precisely centered in the tube and packed with high purity magnesium oxide (Mgo). After the tube is filled with Mgo, it is compacted by rolling or swaging. This elongates the tube, thickens the wire and compresses the Mgo into a rock hard mass. This process permanently stabilizes the coil in the center of the tube where it will not shift during the forming process.

SCREW PLUG TYPE
Tubular Immersion Heaters

Screw plug heaters are used for heating liquids and gases in a variety of processes. Basically hairpin bend tubular elements are welded or brazed into a screw plug. Terminals and electrical connectors are provided in a box. Heaters with built-in thermostat have a thermowell i.e. a hollow tube sealed at one end which is welded or brazed to the screw plug. A temperature sensing thermostat bulb can be inserted in the tube without the necessity of draining liquid.

M.I. Coax and M.I. Biax Heater Cable
INTRODUCTION AND TECHNICAL REFERENCE

The construction of the bulk heater material follows normal mineral insulated cable practice, with a conductor, or conductors, embedded in a highly compressed mineral insulant which is, in turn covered by malleable metal sheath.

Standard AKINSUN bulk heater material contains as conductors 80% Ni-20% Cr. Alloy and Incoloy 600 sheath. Other sheath and conductor metals are selected according to the application requirements of the cable concerned. The cable is furnished in the fully annealed state.

In order for AKINSUN engineering staff to assist with heater design, it is important to obtain as much information on the intended application as possible. Sufficient information must be provided to define the environment, peak temperature (of the sheath), temperature cycles, instrumentation required (if any), physical dimensions, lead-in (and terminal), arrangements, and the electrical power system capabilities (volts, ampere, phases). This may seem to be an inordinate amount of information but all of these factors are involved in the application of M.I. cable heaters and AKINSUN is ready to assist you as required.

Features
  • High Watt Density - Up to 150 watts/sq.(23.34 watts/sq. cm.) can be obtained.
  • Exceptional Flexibility - Can be coiled on a mandrel twice its own diameter. Also allows close fit over pipes and couplings.
  • Corrosion Resistant - To most liquids and acids.
  • Long Life, Vibration Safe - The inorganic material provides a Stable non-aging element.
  • Application Temperatures - To 800C (1472F).
  • Heat Resistant - Can be easily welded, flame sprayed, or brazed to products. Heater can be cast in or imbedded into materials.
  • To The Researcher - It gives a tool for solving unique heating problems.
  • Proof Against Fire - Because these elements are made from inorganic materials they will neither burn nor support combustion and may be operated continuously at temperatures that would be harmful to other systems.

Redcoil Mini Nozzle Cartridge Heaters and Band
INTRODUCTION AND TECHNICAL REFERENCE

Prime consideration must be given to the selection of the heating element material and design since this is the limiting component in high performance coil heaters.

Major operational parameters involved include maximum temperature, time at maximum temperature, and both number and rate of temperature cycles. Chemical and metallurgical effects involved include grain growth, element evaporation (especially in grain boundaries), diffusion, ordering and creep.

AKINSUN application engineers are qualified to help in your selection and design. To minimize control problems and shifts in heat flux profiles with changing temperatures, heating element should have very low temperature coefficients of resistivity (0.0001 per C).

They should be stabilized with appropriate chemical additives that inhibit grain growth. Conventional heating alloys such as the Nichromes, Tophets, Chromels and Kanthals (among others) have even lower coefficients and have stabilizing additives. Certain nickel base alloys such as some Inconels, some Hastelloys and some Cupro-Nickel alloys exhibit similar characteristics. Pure metals do not normally make good heating elements because they have high temperature coefficient of resistivity and are not stabilized. This would cause a large variation in resistance with a change in temperature and would interfere with the desired operation and heat flux profile of many types of heaters.
